Biography of Justice Sheila Ray

Justice Sheila Ray regularly presides in the Provincial Offences Appeal Court at Old City Hall, Toronto, and the other specialized courts including the Mental Health Court, Gladue (Aboriginal) Court, and the early intervention domestic violence court. A bilingual jurist, she has been a Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice since 1992. A student friendly judge, she has been a frequent guest speaker at law student education, continuing legal education, and public legal education events, and regularly hosts students and international visitors to the courts. Prior to her judicial appointment, she worked as a legal advisor to the Federal Department of Justice on criminal justice and regulatory reform initiatives. She represented the federal government in litigation, some of which was precedent-setting, before courts and tribunals throughout Canada in both official languages, and was active in the multicultural community.
